英國公司申請種植能製造魚油作物

英國科學家已向政府申請核准，以實地種植能夠製造魚油的基因改造(GM)作物。

Rothamsted研究所用基因改造技術培育的亞麻薺，能夠製造魚油所含的兩種重要omega-3脂肪酸EPA和DHA。這兩種物質已顯示能夠促進人類心臟血管健康。

但是，人類對魚油需求量不斷增加，魚產卻逐漸減少，現有魚油供應又有八成用於水產養殖，因此科學家希望尋找新的魚油來源。

亞麻薺是在歐洲和北美廣泛栽種的植物，Rothamsted已在實驗室和溫室成功試種能製造魚油的亞麻薺，現在希望在受到控制的實際環境栽種。

英國雖然進口GM作物，可是當地民眾一直反對商業種植任何這類作物，因此上述試驗可能引起爭議。
